Household rubbish collections could move to once every three weeks. An independent review of the city’s bins and waste services highlights lack of trust between residents, council and staff as major flaw – but sets out way forward towards cleaner Birmingham
The proposals support the city council’s aims of making Birmingham a great city to live in by keeping the streets free from waste and its ambition to increase recycling rates for domestic collections.
This review has carried out at a cost of less than £100,000, specialist environmental consultants Wood warn the council faces “severe risks” if it fails to act on its recommendations and make rapid improvement.
Cllr John O’Shea (Lab, Acocks Green) said that would mean the ‘smelly’ waste which is the main concern to residents would be taken away every seven days.
The independent review was agreed as part of an agreement with Unite to end the ‘secret payments’ dispute last year, and it was also recommended by auditors in a formal warning to the council in 2019.
The consultants’ final report will be delivered in the summer.
